How Cabinlocator #BreakTheBias, Women in manufacturing

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #BreakThe Bias. with Women in the manufacturing workplace

The campaign is encouraging everyone to come together and celebrate women’s achievements and reinforce a commitment to women’s equality.

Over the past week Cabinlocator have been shining a spotlight on our fantastic female employees who represent 22% of our workforce. Although 22% may seem low, it is higher than standard gender diversity rates within similar industries such as construction and manufacturing.

Being a small, family run business and having equal part female directors, we believe this helps make Cabinlocator an inclusive working environment and creates a friendly and balanced culture.

We asked our female employees why they enjoyed working at Cabinlocator and they happily shared their reasons.

Nicky Blain, Sales Coordinator.

“There’s a lovely atmosphere in the office, it’s a family run business and everyone is so friendly and helpful”

Charlotte Mews, Marketing Manager.

“After furlough and having my first child, I was anxious about getting back into the swing of things in a working environment. I needn’t have been, the team at Cabinlocator are so friendly, and despite me working part time hours, I feel fully involved with everything going on in the business”

Penny Redman, Stores and Quality Coordinator.

“I enjoy how varied my role is, I get to work with both office and the workshop teams, it’s always good fun and definitely has a family feel to it”

Campaigns such as #BreaktheBias are a great way of highlighting common issues female employees encounter in the workplace and start conversations about what can be done to make a difference.

A report in 2017 by the Young Women’s Trust* not only highlighted that male apprentices earned more than women – £7.25 vs £6.67 per hour – but women apprentices are also focused in relatively few sectors. “In key sectors such as engineering men outnumber women 25 to one,” it warned.

If you see inequalities within your workplace, speak up and together we will build towards a more inclusive and diverse community for future generations.
