School canteens are essential spaces to provide pupils with nutritious meals, and also serve as social spaces where they can meet up with friends in different classes. Often, teachers or supervisors will also join the pupils in the canteen to help them become confident and comfortable at communicating with adults.
Good quality school meals are not just an optional extra for many students; they are a lifeline, particularly as the cost of living increases and many more families are struggling to make ends meet. The government has recognised the importance of proper nutrition for children, which has been linked to higher educational achievement.
However, pressure on school places is increasing at a time when schools are facing deep cuts to their budgets. Many schools are also facing ongoing battles with poor quality buildings that are not fit for purpose or unsafe, yet can’t access funding for adequate repairs or replacements.
Portable cabin hire offers an ideal solution for schools who are looking for an affordable way to expand their canteen space within a short timeframe and with minimal disruption. Here’s a look at some of the ways they can benefit school pupils, in light of the planned rollout of universal breakfast clubs for primary school children in England.
The free breakfast scheme rollout
The government has committed to offering a free breakfast club in every state-funded primary school in England and at least 30 minutes of free childcare every day. This will support working parents by allowing them to drop off their children half an hour earlier, and will also give children an optimal start to the day.
This will help children feel energised and ready to learn, boosting their confidence, promoting good behaviour and improving their academic performance. It will also help teachers to focus on their job rather than deal with the consequences of children who may be arriving late or hungry for lessons.
Ultimately, the breakfast clubs are designed to break down barriers, ease child poverty and create a more equal start in life for children. Nursery World reports that the pilot scheme of 750 adopter schools across England will be rolled out from April 2025, ahead of the national rollout planned for 2026.
The schools in the pilot scheme will be given extra government funding to pay for the meals, staffing, and potentially any adjustments to their facilities that may be necessary.
Education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said, ‘Free breakfast clubs sit right at the heart of our Plan for Change, breaking the link between background and success for families all over the country. Breakfast clubs can have a transformative impact on the lives of children, feeding hungry tummies and fuelling hungry minds, so every child begins the day ready to learn.’
She added: ‘Alongside our plans to roll out school-based nurseries and get thousands more children school-ready, this government is delivering the reforms needed to give every child, wherever they grow up, the best start in life.’
Jackie Fitton, headteacher at Kearsley West Primary School, which is taking part in the pilot breakfast club scheme in April, told the publication: ‘We are delighted to be one of the early adopter schools. For our school, the funding provided will be a real-life saver, ensuring we can provide a healthy breakfast and supportive start to the day for our pupils.’
She added: ‘Breakfast clubs have already made a massive difference to pupils’ wellbeing, providing them with time to settle in, socialise with friends and get ready to learn.’
How can portable cabins be used for school canteens?
Portable cabins are a fast, minimally disruptive and cost effective way for schools to expand their canteen facilities. They can be adjoined to create larger interconnected spaces for dining and social areas, and fully integrated with utilities and modern appliances to accommodate industrial kitchens and serving stations.
The cabins can be easily customised to comply with health and safety regulations and meet the required standards for hygiene and safety. For example, they can be fitted with antimicrobial flooring and surfaces, anti-slip flooring, and effective ventilation and extractor systems.
Portable cabins are also an eco-friendly and sustainable resource, with good insulation and modern LED lighting systems that will minimise energy consumption and reduce operational costs.
